• Smoking: Nicotine causes the gums to produce melanin, which typically creates dark spots or patches called “smoker’s melanosis.”
• Medical conditions or medication: There are some medical conditions and medications that can lead to gum discoloration.
• Amalgam tattoos: Tiny fragments of silver dental fillings can penetrate into the gum tissue and form dark spots.
